FORGET STITCHES
Leaving stitches on the eye after pterygium surgery is a major source of pain and inflammation.
Our modern technique leaves no stitches behind to produce a much better tolerated patient experience from a pain perspective.
If you’ve had pterygium surgery with stitches in the past and been put off having further necessary surgery because of the discomfort, make an appointment to see how our signature no-stitch pterygium surgery can help you
Restore your eyes
Whether your pterygium looks unsightly in photos and the mirror, causes redness and discomfort, or is affecting your vision, pterygium surgery might be able to improve the quality of your life.
Our day surgery procedure is performed under twilight anaesthetic so you won’t be aware, and with the eye numb so you won’t feel anything. You go home straight away once you’re awake and had a drink and snack.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A PTERYGIUM
-
Persistent or intermittent redness in the affected area, often worse in wind or sun
-
A gritty, scratchy, or foreign-body sensation, particularly in dry or outdoor environments
-
A fleshy, triangular tissue extending from the inner corner of the eye toward the pupil
-
Distortion or reduced clarity, especially if the growth begins to encroach on the corneal centre
-
Excessive watering, particularly in bright light or windy conditions
-
Noticeable appearance affecting self-confidence, particularly in professional or social settings
YOUR PTERYGIUM JOURNEY
what to expect
Dr. Hayes will examine your eye with a slit-lamp biomicroscope, assess the size and extent of the pterygium, review your visual acuity and corneal topography, and discuss your symptoms, timeline, and surgical goals. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions before a surgical date is arranged.
Consultation & assessment
You will receive specific pre-operative instructions including the use of anti-inflammatory eye drops in the days prior, fasting requirements for sedation, and what to arrange for your transport home. The team at The Vision Surgeon will guide you through each step.
Pre-operative preparation
The procedure is performed under twilight sedation to keep you relaxed with local numbing anaesthetic to ensure a completely pain-free experience. Dr. Hayes removes the pterygium, prepares the ocular surface, harvests the conjunctival autograft, and secures it with fibrin tissue glue. The surgery typically takes 30 minutes.
Surgery day - twilight sedation & local anaesthetic
After a brief period in the recovery area, you are discharged with an eye shield, antibiotic ointment, and anti-inflammatory drops. Most patients experience no more than mild discomfort in the first 24–48 hours — typically described as a gritty or scratchy sensation — usually well-managed with the prescribed drops and simple analgesia. All our patients receive a script for stronger painkiller as a backup in case they need them, though this is rare.
Immediate recovery
All patients are ordinarily reviewed at one week, 6 weeks, and 3 months post-operatively. Though this is flexible to what suits you. Your referring optometrist and GP will also be kept informed and - particularly for distant patients - can participate in ongoing co-management of your post-operative care.
