Dr Rylan Hayes believes exceptional eye care starts with the person, not the condition. His ethos centres on patient‑centric care: listening to individual goals, explaining options clearly, and tailoring treatment pathways to each patient’s lifestyle and visual needs. Using his signature no‑stitch pterygium technique, Dr Hayes offers bespoke surgical solutions that prioritise both function and appearance — reducing recurrence risk, optimising visual recovery and minimising downtime. Every surgical plan is personalised, blending evidence‑based practice with surgical finesse to restore vision, comfort and confidence so patients can get back to the activities that matter most.

Meet Dr Rylan Hayes

- The Vision Surgeon

A specialist dedicated to one of ophthalmology's most under appreciated problems

Dr. Rylan Hayes is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, and the founder of The Vision Surgeon.

After completing his medical degree and specialty ophthalmology training in Australia, Dr. Hayes pursued subspecialty interest in anterior segment surgery, with a particular focus on corneal and ocular surface conditions — including pterygium surgery. He has performed hundreds of pterygium surgeries and continuously refines his approach with each case.

Dr. Hayes developed his own Signature No-Stitch Pterygium Surgery technique — a conjunctival autograft procedure using fibrin tissue glue rather than sutures — to achieve faster healing, a more natural appearance, and a significantly lower recurrence rate than conventional sutured approaches. His results are his reputation.

As a leading Australian ophthalmologist, Dr. Hayes offers a comprehensive range of ophthalmic services including cataract and lens surgery, laser vision correction, MIGS glaucoma procedures including MINIject®, and premium intraocular lens implants. He was the first - and currently the only - Sunshine Coast ophthalmologist certified to perform MINIject®.

Patients travel from across Queensland and interstate to have their pterygium treated by Dr. Hayes — not because there are no closer options, but because of his reputation.

Dr Hayes holds a specialist ophthalmologist appointment at Mater Hospital Brisbane, where he offers his skills in Australia’s public hospital system, and supervises and trains the next generation of ophthalmologists in complex surgical techniques. • A pterygium that comes back is a failure — full stop. Every element of Dr. Hayes's technique is chosen to make recurrence as unlikely as biologically possible.

Optimised vision after pterygium surgery is crucial. Whether performed to reduce scarring and astigmatism, or for cosmetic and comfort improvement, the procedure is tailored to ensure vision outcomes are as good as possible.

  • The eye is one of the most scrutinised parts of the human face. Dr. Hayes treats the appearance of the post-surgical eye as a legitimate clinical priority — not a secondary concern. Patients should feel comfortable making eye contact again.

  • Fibrin tissue glue rather than sutures means less inflammation, faster visual recovery, and a more comfortable healing experience. It is the standard Dr. Hayes holds himself to for every patient.
